I originally wanted to read this book after I watched Lawless and learned that it was based off of a book. And i'm glad i purchased it because it is better than the movie, we are able to learn more about the brothers and what they went through.
This novel written by Matt Bondurant is based on the true story of Matt Bondurant's grandfather and granduncles. Throughout the book we go back and forth between the Bondurant brothers and Sherwood Anderson. Anderson is a journalist and the author of Winesburg, Ohio. The brothers were notorious for selling moonshine during the Prohibition and continued to do so after. We learn throughout the book what it was like for them and how they lived through all they went through. The brothers are hard not to like and the cops and officers easy to hate. On the back cover it says, "Matt Bondurant brings these men-their dark deeds, their long silences, their deep desires-to life", and i agree wholeheartedly. This book is a must read. Once you read it, you will not want to put it down.
